Korea¡¯s First Stealth Destroyer Launched

HHI has launched the first 4,000-ton class Korean destroyer ordered by the Republic of Korea Navy.
The launching ceremony for the warship was held with President Roh Moo-hyun, First Lady Kwon Yang-sook, Minister of Defense Choi Young-kil, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Kim Jongwhan, CEO of HHI Choi Kil-seon and 340 other guests at HHI¡¯s Special and Naval Shipbuilding Yard on April 11, 2003 in Ulsan.
During the launching ceremony, First Lady Kwon Yang-sook named the warship Munmudaewang-ham. The warship takes its name after ¡°Munmudaewang (King Munmu the Great ),¡± the king of the Silla Dynasty who unified the Korean peninsula and strived to protect the nation even after his death.
Munmudaewang-ham is Korea¡¯s first stealth destroyer with capabilities of surface-to-surface, surfaceto- air and antisubmarine warfare, and it is currently the largest warship built by HHI.

New Technology Center

HHI will establish a technology center in the US.
HHI has signed a joint-venture agreement with Enova Systems Inc. of the US to establish a new technology center (ATC: Advanced Technology Center) in Torrance, California to research power conversion for mobile and stationary energy systems.
The new research center is expected to boost the presence of HHI in these markets and serve as the cornerstone of its global technology network. The primary focus of research will be on developing the cutting-edge technology for power equipment of electric vehicles and advanced power management and conversion programs.
Min Keh-sik, HHI president & CEO, says, ¡°The Advanced Technology Center established on the basis of both parties¡¯ technologies and mutual faith will be key to open the door to the future for both our customers and ourselves.¡±
The center will be Korea¡¯s first overseas research center established in connection with Korean electric vehicles and advanced power management and conversion programs. Notably, since the field of research that will be undertaken by the center is in its early stages globally, it has already drawn much interest worldwide. Enova Systems is a leading designer, developer, and manufacturer of power management and conversion systems for the global mobile and stationary alternative energy market. HHI first established relations with Enova Systems when it produced Enova¡¯s drive systems for electric vehicles in 1998.

President Choi Heads KSA

HHI president & CEO, Choi Kil-seon, has been elected the 7th chairman of the Korea Shipbuilders¡¯ Association (KSA) at their extraordinary general meeting.
KSA was established in 1977 to enhance cooperation among local shipbuilders and to promote international cooperation for sound development of the world shipbuilding industry. Currently, eleven shipbuilding companies capable of building ships of 5,000 GT and over are the members of KSA.

Education for Housewives

Hyundai Housewives College held an enrollment ceremony for 2003 at Hanmaeum Center in Ulsan.
The enrollment ceremony was held in front of 500 participants including Mrs. Kim Young-myung, honorary president of Hyundai Housewives College, guests of honor and 450 entering students. At the ceremony, Mrs. Kim urged the entering students to become informed housewives in society and to practice the school precepts of ¡°Learning Wife, Loving Mother and Thrifty Housewife.¡±
The first class of 2003 for the college commenced with a special lecture titled: ¡°Woman¡¯s Wisdom that Leads to a Happy Family.¡±
