Hyundai Technical Education
Institute (HTEI) was
established in 1972 by HHI to
foster highly skilled workers
through intensive technical
training and education in areas
such as shipbuilding, machinery
and electrical engineering. At
the time, HHI had just begun
construction on its shipyard and
received orders for two 260,000-dwt VLCCs. Taking on
these monumental tasks
required a skilled and educated
workforce, especially since HHI
had no prior experience in building
ships of such magnitude.
HTEI took on the challenge and
trained workers that contributed
to HHI¡¯s remarkable rise to
become the world¡¯s leading
shipyard.
Today, HTEI operates various professional training programs
for employees in a modern
9,346m2 facility staffed by technical
experts and professional
instructors in their respective
fields. It also runs a technical
college that offers yearlong
courses in various engineering
fields. Since 1999, the college
has graduated a total of 485
employees, and 96 trainees are
currently enrolled in its programs.
Aiming to maintain HHI¡¯s
competitive edge in heavy
industry by establishing high technical standards, HTEI offers
many in-company and national
certification programs.
So far, a total of ten technical
certification courses have
been accredited by Korea¡¯s
Ministry of Labor. Over the
years, 10,703 employees have
been certified including 3,647 as
welding specialists and 1,204 as
technical specialists. In addition,
HTEI teamed up with HHI¡¯s 128
subcontractors to form a technical
education consortium, which
provides the same high-quality
training programs of HTEI to
subcontractors¡¯ employees.
HTEI has received numerous
presidential and ministerial honors.
Furthermore, its graduates
have competed in the World
Skill Competition since 1978,
winning a total of 63 medals
including 36 gold medals.
